HMS IS SEEKING A NEW BOARD MEMBER

SEEKING NEW BOARD MEMBER: HMS has had a successful year as it transitioned towards the organisation required to thrive in a rapidly changing environment in supporting locals to live independently in their own homes for longer.
The organisation has endeavoured to provide a strong foundation to the community based on relevant services of high quality and a trusted relationship with our clients. The relationship with our clients is personal and crucial for us to understand their needs and deliver so to help them remain independent and in control, feel secure, and maintain a high quality of life and health. HMS has continued to adapt throughout the past 12 months against a backdrop of Government deregulation in home care packages with the introduction of the Consumer Directed Care” system in February 2017, a rapidly changing service provider landscape and wavering trust amongst the community in aged care facilities being highlighted through increased media scrutiny.
Changes to Government funding means that the level of subsidised funding for people, our clients, is decreasing and changing in how awarded funding is managed. This has a significant impact for our community members with home modifications and maintenance needs, as well as community-based organisations such as HMS. No longer can the home modification industry, home care package providers and many other social service enterprises rely upon block government funding in the future, as they have done in the past. It is a permanent shift that requires the Board, management and staff to implement an entrepreneurial mindset within a challenging time frame. In response to this backdrop, one of the primary objectives for HMS is to be financially self-sufficient within the next three years.
A number of initiatives have been implemented or continued to be embedded, including flexible service packages and partnerships with other key community organisations. Importantly the mix of revenue for HMS has continued to grow towards clients not relying on Government subsidisation. This is the direction the Government is taking for Australians and HMS strategy has shown signs of beginning a successful transition. The year has included increased focus on closer relationships with our community members, HMS’ clients.
The Board meets in the Caringbah office every second month and meets on a couple of additional ½ days for special planning purposes and workshops.
We seek someone with skills, experience and community experience in the non-for profit environment to join our Board as the local Community Representative in the capacity of a Non-Executive Director (NED). The Service recently recruited new skills and refreshed 80% of the Board. We now seek a Non-Executive Director (NED) with experience working within the local community to complement the existing Board members skills to contribute to the ongoing setting and oversight for the culture, strategy, risk management and positioning for the organisation.
The role requires the following attributes, as a minimum:
- You are passionate about helping the service grow and strengthen and you enjoy engaging with people and the community in general;
- You are committed to best-practice i.e. governance as a member of the Board
- You have an appreciation for the responsibilities of a Board member
- You participate in training as identified by the Board
- You have good knowledge or experience in this type of environment.
It important for HMS to gain a greater understanding of clients need, increase client engagement and assist in evolving best practice for home modifications.
As NED Board member for HMS with involvement in the oversight of strategic goals and deliverables you will need to:
- Have extensive local community knowledge;
- Experience in dealing with My Aged Care (MAC) and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) environment;
- Assist the Board grow its awareness regarding the local community issues and identifiable needs;
- Assist in positioning the organisation to increase awareness and understanding of HMS service provision with our target market;
- Provide oversight and guidance to the Manager, wherever needed, to implement HMS and community strategies;
- Participate in community presentation networking events and collate feedback for the Board team;
- Assist in developing strategies and solutions to support HMS policies and to meet organisational goals and objectives to serve the community.
A brief CV submitted demonstrating the above attributes to be submitted for Board review.
Requirements: Understanding of Board compliance, understanding of Board roles, policies development, friendly, people engagement, promoting, leading and innovative attributes would be a plus for this role as these are attributes we are seeking.
